I've read 1984...a very good read, but as far as I can tell Brave New World (haven't read it) seems to be alot better prediction of today...

Sometimes it amazes me to what extent people distract themselves with so much bullshit they become completely apathetic to the world around them...just look at the pathetic amount of voter-turnout in this part of the world...

I read them both and, I dunno, I tend to think Orwell was just as right as Huxley except Orwell's predictions are scarier IMO.

Ever since 9/11, the Americans have used the "Threat Level" in exactly the same way that Big Brother used the war with Eurasia. Emmanuel Goldstein is constantly being manifested in the form of Bin Laden, Hussein, Ahmadinejad, etc. The fear of foreign threat is never going to go away because it's so usable for passing legislation and getting the public to let the government do anything in the name of National Security.

It would appear that Western culture is leaning towards Huxley's view of the future, although one only has to look south to see the Orwellian fear model alive and well. I think ultimately Huxley will win out as people become apathetic to their fears in favour of the latest self indulgent pass time. In Marx's time it was religion, in our's it's "entertainment"...um same thing I guess...

Just sayin,

Oh, thanks for the link Lareina,

B.

Joe, thanks for reminding me about that response from Chief Seattle. I read that in a course textbook last year for one of my classes at Uvic and I was very moved by it at the time. It's just stunning to know that he actually said that in reply to the official's offer to buy the land. I almost prefer reading it vs. listening to it (First Nations way of speaking is rather slow) but the message retains its importance.

PS: Justin, resist the urge to succumb to sadness and the inevitable denial of the abuses going on in the world; just do something constructive about it. You're internet savvy, so I'm guessing you might be somewhat well-read about some of the current major injustices, so perhaps I'm just typing needlessly, but I like to spout/communicate just in case... lol.

I don't deny the abuses going on around the world...but that Chief Seattle thing was a major downer.

I wish I had the balls and the required facilities to go to Japan and find the people who slaughter dolphins and go fucking old school savage on every one of those motherfuckers. Oh man I got a rage in me right now because I just got it back in my mind...

Oh man, I know the feeling. Yesterday, after reading a LOT of news articles and posts in the Politics, World News, Environment and Business sections of reddit, I had an overwhelming urge to assassinate handfulls of Canadian, American and a variety of international corporate/business and political figures.

It just burns me up to know that JFK got shot in the head for trying to take steps in the right direction, yet every American president after him, bought, sold and controlled by corporations and the wealthy elite and whoever else, manage to get away with unspeakable atrocities unscathed.

Why are the 'bad guys' always the ones to get organized and take action while the 'good guys' just gather a handful of friends to wave signs on the lawns of Parliament buildings and company-premises sidewalks? What happened to all the revolutionaries who actually have the skills and the nerve to practice what they preach and change the course of history the way their opponents do?

Oh god.. I better end the rant now while my head is only partway up my rear end.

every time I read it, it kinda moves me...

not it the "I'm a thoughtful, feeling person",

but rather in the "hey.. there's no boobies in this!!"

I have my rep to look out for
